Just across the square from O'Callaghan-Walshe in Rosscarbery, The Pilgrim's Rest gives out all the right vibes (Illy coffee and lovely home-bakes never fail to please) and is well worth checking out for a journey break.
It's a charming, prettily appointed café – old pine tables and chairs, freshly painted russet and yellow walls - with daily blackboard menu.
The kind of tasty dishes to look out for include good homemade soup (€4.50), a terrific baked ham and Cooleeney cheese ciabatta (€9.50), warm chicken salad (€11.50), cream cheese and red onion bagel (€8.50). Excellent Illy coffee (€2.10) appears on a long list of teas and coffee and a few wines
This makes a very pleasant stop for a wholesome lunch and good baking in summer, although off season menus may be quite restricted - perhaps just coffee and cakes in winter. But very good coffee and cakes nevertheless.
: Open seven days in season for breakfast 10 to noon and lunch/afternoon tea until 5pm. More restricted times off-season. MasterCard, Visa.
