PROBY'S HAS RECENTLY REOPENED FOLLOWING AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF CLOSURE - AWAITING RE-ASSESSMENT.

Handier to the city centre than it first appears, this is a pleasant spot for a bite to eat during the day (tables outside for fine weather) as well as in the evening, when menus are more likely to include less usual dishes, such as a main course house speciality of duck confit with foie gras and caramelised onion, sauteed potatoes & green cabbage with bacon lardons.

Although the style - established before the current wave and competently executed - is global cuisine, with an emphasis on things Mediterranean, plenty of local produce is used: West Cork black pudding is a favourite in starters, for example and fish from Ballycotton.

Fast lunch (€8.50 for a gourmet sandwich with a choice of soup, fried or salad) and early dinner menus offer especially good value. A compact, well-chosen wine list offers about 40 wines, including a pair of appealing French house wines, plus quite an extensive menu of aperitifs, beers and after dinner drinks. An extended, covered terrace was recently completed.
