Thady Inn

Formerly a barracks for British soldiers, this small whitewashed pub is set well back from the road and the present owners, Den and Martha O'Flaherty, have kept it simple, just as the previous generation did for 30 years before them.

They offer a small menu and do a limited number of well-known dishes well: egg mayonnaise, smoked salmon, home-cooked chicken, ham or tongue salad and - the dish that has really made their reputation - great steaks, served with perfectly cooked crispy chips - rounded off with homely apple tart and cream, or perhaps some hot chocolate cake.

A good place to break a journey - it's refreshing to visit a pub that hasn't been done up and concentrates on the business of being an inn - looking after wayfarers well.
