Woodhill House
Once the home of Ireland’s last commercial whaling family, John and Nancy Yates’ large house is on the edge of the village, overlooking the Donegal Highlands, and their years of restoration work are now bearing fruit.
As well as the original rooms in the main house, which vary in position, size and character, and are now being refurbished, they offer lovely accommodation in converted outbuildings; overlooking the gardens; the rooms are all en-suite and slightly dearer than those in the house, but they are very spacious and appealingly furnished, with good en-suite bathrooms.
As the rooms vary so much it is advisable to discuss your requirements when booking. There’s also a bar and restaurant (popular locally - booking recommended) offering quite traditional food based on local ingredients at reasonable prices: specialities include Donegal mountain lamb, and carrageen pudding.
The gradual restoration of the gardens is perhaps Nancy’s greatest achievement, and renovations on both the main house and outbuildings are still on-going.
