We enjoyed dozens of great meals in our travels through 2014 (and, alas, had a few disappointments too). This month’s 10 of the Best is just a tiny taste of the best that Ireland currently offers discerning diners. But it’s an interesting collection, reflecting a wide range of experiences that were all about much more than good food - which, however delicious, is nothing without caring service and a genuine desire to please the guest.

Every year on our travels we are delighted by the number and calibre of brave new businesses that have opened, with owners fired up by enthusiasm and determination to create a great experence for their guests. Here are ten of the ones we were most impressed with during 2014.
BREWPUBS, CRAFT BREWERS & CIDER MAKERS - 10 OF THE BEST
Caroline Hennessy and Kristin’s Jensen’s superb book Sláinte, The Complete Guide to Irish Craft Beer and Cider really does tell you everything you ever wanted to know about craft beer and cider in Ireland (plus a whole lot that you hadn’t ever thought about) and, among many other things, it details the brewpubs and craft breweries that have emerged since 1981. There are dozens of them and the number is growing all the time, so we’ve picked just ten to illustrate the range - and, it being the apple season, we’re kicking off with a couple of cider makers, even though they’re in the minority (so far).

High summer draws us all to the coast and you can’t beat a break along Ireland’s dramatic western seaboard. So try to ignore the intrusively excessive motorway-blue Wild Atlantic Way signage and enjoy the glories that nature has supplied in abundance.
