RURAL DESTINATION OF THE YEAR: Castle Leslie Estate, Glaslough, Co Monaghan
Sponsored by the Rigney family’s iconic business, The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim, this new award is one of two (along with our Taste of the Waterways Award) that reflect their own philosophy and specifically recognise food and hospitality destinations across rural Ireland, that are an intrinsic part of the very fabric of local life, sharing joint values of partnership, sustainability and a thriving rural community. Tucked away in the Monaghan countryside, this much loved destination is the embodiment of that spirit – few places in Ireland capture heritage, hospitality and community spirit as completely as Castle Leslie Estate. In the Leslie family for over three centuries, this remarkable 1,000-acre estate in Glaslough remains one of the country’s great treasures – a destination that is as much about people and place as it is about grandeur. Guests may stay in the magnificent Castle itself, where period rooms brim with eccentric charm, or at the Lodge at Castle Leslie, a handsome courtyard hotel just inside the gates that is especially loved by equestrian enthusiasts making use of the renowned riding centre. Very much a food destination also, menus throughout - including Snaffles Restaurant and Conor’s Bar - showcase produce from Monaghan and neighbouring counties, and the hospitality is warm and genuine. Beyond the dining experience and accommodation, the estate’s activities – from riding and falconry to boating and walking – connect visitors to the land in ways that are memorable and authentic, and supportive engagement with local endeavours is offered at every opportunity. For its role in sustaining heritage while engaging warmly with visitors and community alike, Castle Leslie Estate truly embodies the spirit of this Rural & Community Award.
TASTE OF THE WATERWAYS 2025: The Left Bank Bistro, Athlone, Co Westmeath
Athlone’s location on the River Shannon has long made it a natural stopping point, but in recent years the town has become a destination in its own right – and at the heart of that appeal lies The Left Bank Bistro. For many discerning visitors it would be unthinkable to pass through Athlone without a visit to Annie McNamara and Mary McCullagh’s elegantly informal contemporary restaurant, a pioneer of modern Irish dining on the waterways. With its airy interior, softened by subtle colours and architectural salvage details, the tone is relaxed and stylish. The menus follow suit: short, keenly priced, and ever changing to reflect seasonality, quality and flavour. Specials chalked on a blackboard add to the sense of spontaneity, while fresh fish has always merited its own dedicated menu. From focaccia, zingy salads and pasta at lunch to the more luxurious dishes offered at dinner, the food is consistently vibrant and full of life. Vegetarians are especially well catered for too, and desserts are legendary – few can resist indulgent treats such as the famous double chocolate mud cake. Drinks too are thoughtfully selected, with a concise wine list, craft beers and cocktails all complementing the food with ease. Family friendly despite its grown-up style, this welcoming bistro has created an atmosphere where all ages feel at home. It is no surprise that The Left Bank Bistro has become such an Athlone institution.
