Located on the edge of the town and in a fine hillside location, the Hillgrove is the leading hotel in the area and offers excellent business and leisure facilities.

The impressive foyer is smartly furnished in a classic contemporary style with the public areas both spacious and inviting.

PK's Bar & Bistro is popular with locals and residents alike and offers a wide variety of snacks and meals – ranging from pan-fried medallions of beef to butterflied chicken fillet to an unusual lentil & butterbean salad. The quieter Toulouse-Lautrec lounge has complimentary newspapers and board games.

The stylish and well-appointed restaurant, Vettriano, has wall to ceiling windows overlooking an outdoor seating terrace with views of the town. All the poultry, duck and beef on the menu is sourced locally from Monaghan farmers. The menu is short; as well as meat, you may find steamed mussels to start and fillet of salmon on the mains. Desserts are excellent – it’s impossible to resist salted caramel tart with roasted peanuts, chocolate ganache and honeycomb ice cream. A good buffet breakfast is also served here; there’s an open plan kitchen where you can watch chefs hard at work.

Bedrooms are spacious and contemporary, all with pleasant views, a full range of facilities and smart en-suite bathrooms, with both tub and shower. All rooms have free wifi, writing bureau and chair and an electronic safe.

Scallywags Kids Club provides supervised activities Mon-Friday:10am–1pm & 5pm–9pm during school holidays. Activities include bouncy castles, arts and crafts classes and on pizza night kids get to make their own pizza with one of the hotel’s chefs. ‘Teen Zone’ for older children has PlayStation pods, arcade games and a pool table. An outdoor playground provides hours of fun (improvements expected before the 2020 season).

Staff are friendly and very helpful and hen parties are made welcome, with a range of options for one or two nights.

All in all, the Hillgrove is an attractive destination for family breaks.

*Having been owned since 2004 by Colm and Audri Herron - who extended and the hotel and undertook major improvements - the Hillgrove was acquired in 2017 by Irish hotel group iNua Hospitality, who also own the five-star Muckross Park Hotel & Spa in Killarney, The Kilkenny Hibernian Hotel and the Radisson Blu Hotels at Little Island Cork, Limerick and Athlone. iNua Hospitality has upgraded both the exterior and interior of this popular hotel since their acquisition.
