Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality.

Georgina Campbell

Regan Organic Produce is a 45 acre organic mixed farm where the main focus is on poultry - with both laying and table chickens and ducks, as well as turkeys for Christmas - but there are also pigs, lambs and a small suckler herd. Details of all the breeds are given on the farm's website.

Having grown up on a conventional farm and studied agriculture, Mary Regan decided to start the process of organic conversion in 2004 and became certified by the Organic Trust in 2006. This decision mainly stemmed from her experience of intensive animal rearing systems, particularly in the area of pigs and poultry, and a growing interest in the organic option.

Mary Regan produces oven-ready chickens and chicken portions, chicken livers, ducks and turkeys, hen and duck eggs, pork roasts and sausages, all of which are available from the farm shop, along with their own vegetables in season. Her ducks were recognised recently by Euro-Toques, who singled them out for one of their very prestigious awards in 2013, citing “superb flavour and excellent animal husbandry and production methods”.

A range of other locally produced items is offered in the shop too, such as vegetables, breads, scones, jams, farmers' butter, buttermilk, honey, chutneys, cheeses, yoghurt, apples, juices, rashers, and puddings.

Keenly aware of the need to be competitive, Mary makes every effort to offer their high quality produce at affordable prices and, as well as selling through the shop, farmers’ markets and a selection of retail outlets, she offers a box scheme for people who would like to buy direct but can’t get to the shop. Delivery is available.

Farm visits are welcome by arrangement too, with tours offered for schools, students, active retirement or any other groups interested in seeing a sustainable mixed farm in action. In line with their organic ethos, they also grow their own wheat for feeding and the straw from the wheat is used as bedding for the animals. An interesting place to visit.
