Situated high on a cliff edge with a panoramic view of Rossnowlagh Beach, Donegal Bay and the Blue Stack Mountains in South Donegal, this very popular inn is a truly breathtaking spot to unwind.

The building dates back to 1845 and is full of character, with an open fire for chilly days, comfortable old furniture and the constantly changing presence of the sea and sky – a dramatic presence when the surf is up, and a great spot to watch the skilful game being played out in the waves down below.

Some might feel that the inn would benefit from some updating, to others it’s that very quirkiness that lends charm to the surroundings. The atmosphere is relaxed and, whilst proprietor Emily Browne and her staff are efficient, the meal experience is casual.

Traditional dishes sit comfortably alongside more fashionable food styles on the menu, and the tasty and appealingly presented meals cooked by highly regarded Head Chef, Deirdre Clinton, suit the cosy laid-back ambience.

Menus offer a good choice and, as one might expect, fish is plentiful (although, surprisingly, it is not especially highlighted) and even the Caesar Salad comprises of pan seared medallions of monk tail and king prawns, along with the more traditional ingredients of lardons and croutons, on a bed of baby gem drizzled with a house Caesar dressing.

To watch the sun go down over Donegal Bay while enjoying a straightforward and tasty meal such as traditional battered cod with mushy peas, homemade tartare sauce and chipped potatoes, is an unforgettable experience by any standards.

Even during the winter months friendly bar staff are happy to serve a hot drink in front of the big open fire. Well worth a visit.
