Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality. Highly Recommended as a Special Place to Stay Outstanding Location, building or atmosphere Serious About Seafood

The Smugglers Inn

The Hunt family’s famous clifftop inn enjoys a remarkable beachside location right beside the world famous championship Waterville Golf Links and the smartly refurbished rooms are comfortable, some with spectacular views. Local ingredients, especially seafood, star in Henry's cooking for both bar and restaurant.

The Hunt’ familys famous clifftop inn enjoys a remarkable location right beside the world famous championship Waterville Golf Links. Gradual refurbishment of the premises has seen big improvements in recent years; including upgrading the whole frontage - which, together with colourful window boxes, makes a welcoming first impression - and, most recently, the bedrooms have been refurbished with the assistance of Francis and John 'At Your Service' Brennan, no less.

This is an attractive place for an informal meal in the comfortable bar or, in fine sunny weather, at garden tables that overlook a mile of sandy beach to the sea and mountains beyond. The popular restaurant is in a large conservatory dining area which is shaded to prevent glare, and has magnificent views of the golf links and clubhouse, Ballinskelligs Bay and the McGillycuddy Reeks.

Henry Hunt is a talented and dedicated 3rd-generation chef, trained at Ballymaloe Cookery School and with experience in a wide range of prestigious restaurants and hotels in Ireland and abroad before he took over the reins at Smugglers. Local ingredients star in his cooking which has a classical foundation, but includes modern international dishes inspired by his travels too, most noticeably on the bar /early evening menu.

Although there are plenty of other choices, including Kerry lamb and beef and some good vegetarian dishes, local seafood is the speciality here and Henry is committed to using sustainably sourced fish and seafood.

In normal times, lunch is served every day in summer (the set lunch menu is good value, as is the early dinner), and bar snacks are available throughout the day, making this an ideal place to take a break when on the Ring of Kerry, although a phone call to check availability of food is advisable  - and a more recently opened nearby alternative is Smugglers Cafe in Portmagee.

Accommodation is also offered, in pleasant rooms which have all been recently refurbished; they vary in size, outlook and facilities (one has a balcony) and price, but all are comfortably furnished in a homely style. There’s a large first-floor residents’ sitting room with sofas and armchairs, books, television - and magnificent sea views. Summer prices may seem on the high side, but some great value short breaks are also offered off season.
