Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Truffle Fairy

As implied by the whimsical name of her business, there is indeed a touch of magic about chef Mary Teehan’s chocolate creations, and chocoholics visiting the Kilkenny area would do well to seek out both the chocolates themselves and the lovely Truffle Fairy Chocolate Café
Open Mon-Sat 10-5. Also sold at farmers’ markets and selected speciality stores including Glasrai and Goodies, Gowran; can order through the website (email or phone). ALSO AT: 5, Ormonde Street, Kilkenny. abbreviations

As implied by the whimsical name of her business, there is indeed a touch of magic about chef Mary Teehan’s chocolate creations, and chocoholics visiting the Kilkenny area would do well to seek them out.

Mary is something of a legend in her area and anyone with an interest in chocolate (and that must be just about everyone) should make a point of visiting this delightful place as visitors are welcome to the production kitchen, shop and Truffle Fairy Chocolate Café (where you may be lucky enough to get a complimentary truffle with your coffee).

Although best known for luscious truffles and chocolate fudge, the range has expanded to include chocolate bars and chocolate barks (bars covered with dried fruits and/or nuts), cakes and cookies. Mary’s Truffle Fairy Chocolate Brownies have been a Great Taste Awards Gold Star winner and several of her exotic truffles have done well too - a star for Chai espresso truffle and two gold stars each for the Cardamom orange truffle and Tequila salt lemon truffle. The freshness and quality of her ingredients stands out - and all ethically sourced too.

The Truffle Fairy is a member of the Kilkenny Food Trail and supports other local producers - including Cramer's Grove Farmhouse Ice cream, which they love to serve in the café with spelt crepes.

While the main business remains in Thomastown, there is now also a lovely shop on Ormonde Street, in the heart of Kilkenny City.
