Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality.

Glastry Farm Ice Cream

The Taylor family’s beautifully rich and creamy Glastry Farm Ice Cream is made freshly each day in their own creamery
Available from: Selected supermarkets, good farm shops, National Trust shops and other selected outlets. abbreviations

Many of Northern Ireland’s best artisan producers are in Co Down and the lush green grass that grows so well makes it a good dairy area.

The Taylor family, who are Good Food Ireland and Taste of Ulster members, have had a dairy farm here on the Ards peninsula since 1856. Their pedigree herd produces the top quality milk that’s needed to make good ice cream - which they have been doing very successfully since embarking on a farm diversification scheme in 2007.

Their beautifully rich and creamy ice cream is made freshly each day in their own creamery, and no artificial stabilisers or other additives are used – the fact that it is offered in quality outlets including National Trust and Taste of Ulster restaurants speaks for itself.

The range produced by Will Taylor and his team is developing all the time and currently stands at 13 flavours, plus four sorbets, which have recently been introduced. Ever popular classics like Vanilla Bean provide the foundation of the range, while standout flavours which are fun to try include the unique Yellowman Honeycomb (inspired by the crunchy County Antrim speciality), Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey (flavoured with whiskey made at the recently re-opened distillery in Co Westmeath) and Raspberry and Lavender (flavoured with lavender gown in the formal gardens at the nearby National Trust property, Mount Stewart).

Look out for the jaunty packaging with the pink Glastry Farm cow.
