Café Bar Deli

Despite its obvious contemporary appeal - paper place mat menus set the tone by kicking off with home-made breads and marinated olives - the friendly ghosts of the old Bewleys Café are still alive and well in this inspired reincarnation of this much-loved establishment.

Tables are old café style, with bentwood chairs, the original fireplace and a traditional brass railing remain, but a smartly striped awning over the large street window signals the real nature of the place.

Imaginative salads are packed with colourful, flavoursome treats with pizza and pasta menus continuing in the same tone, including daily specials.

Spelt bread is available, all pasta dishes can be made with gluten/wheat free pasta and a dedicated children's menu was introduced in 2007.

A sensibly limited wine list combines quality and style with value; service is friendly and efficient and prices remarkably moderate - an attractive formula for an informal outing.

Branches at: Ranelagh, Dublin 6 (Tel 01 496 1886); Cork (Academy St); and Sligo (Garavogue). Seats 160; children welcome; air conditioning; open 7 days: Mon-Sat, 12.30-11; Sun 2-10pm; A la carte. House wine €23 (litre). No reservations. Closed 25-27 Dec, Good Fri. Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
