Doheny & Nesbitt

Only a stone's throw from Toner's (see entry), Doheny & Nesbitt is another great Dublin institution, but there the similarity ends.

Just around the corner from the Dail (Irish Parliament), this Victorian pub has traditionally attracted a wide spectrum of Dublin society - politicians, economists, lawyers, business names, political and financial journalists - all with a view to get across, or some new scandal to divulge, so a visit here can often be unexpectedly rewarding.

Like the Horseshoe Bar at the nearby Shelbourne Hotel which has a similar reputation and shares the clientéle, half the fun of drinking at Nesbitt's is the anticipation of 'someone' arriving or 'something' happening, both more likely than not.

Although it has been greatly extended recently and is now in essence a superpub, it has at its heart the original, very professionally run bar with an attractive Victorian ambience and a traditional emphasis on drinking and conversation.
