Just outside the walled city, the contemporary design of this popular bar and restaurant makes a great contrast to the age of nearby landmarks. Although seriously modern, it is a friendly and welcoming place that appeals to all age groups and their colourful, fresh-flavoured food suits the mood perfectly.
Originally opened by Mark Caithness in 2001, it was taken over by his daughter and her husband, Shauns and Mark Froydenlund (both chefs who have enjoyed stellar careers In London) in 2023. Despite their high-end experience, they have shown great respect for the winning formula here - and the appreciative locals have been delighted to find that nothing has changed: prices are reasonable, ingredients are sourced locally as far as possible and the cooking always hits the mark, so it's remains a very happy ship.
At first glance the menu seems very international but close examination reveals plenty to please traditionalists too and blackboard specials reflect the same desire to please a wide range of customers. And simple dishes like the Battered Cod lunchs are worth a visit alone, as they have always been.
A no reservations policy is not popular with all customers, but service is helpful and speedy so even, at busy times, the wait for a table should not be too long.
And, for those who were expecting a change of style with Shauna and Mark's arrival, that is now to be found just across the Peace Bridge, where they have opened their second restaurant, The Fold, at the bottom of Ebrington Square.
