Fitzpatrick's Restaurant

This listed building is home to Billy Fitzpatrick's new restaurant, and it has been converted into a relaxing reception/bar area and three dining rooms, which allow for cosy dining areas and make a very pleasant place to eat. The bar is bright and well-designed, with an unusual copper bar counter and fresh flowers, and menus - including the early dinner menu and Sunday lunch, which both offer very good value - are well-balanced, give plenty of choice. In the restaurant, tables are rather small, but attractively set up with linen cloths and cream overlays, quality glasses and cutlery, fresh flowers and candles - let down a little by paper napkins. The pleasing ambience, together with a promising menu that reads well, raises expectations, and cooking can be a little patchy; however, highlights on a recent visit included a pretty asparagus and lobster salad, and a creamy lobster broth - and, while simple enough, the vegetables, accompanying roasted sea bass with ravioli and roast loin of lamb, attracted praise for excellent flavour and accurate cooking. Pleasant, neatly uniformed staff are well-trained and keen to please and, hopefully, the kitchen will settle down and deliver the full promise of those lovely menus. The wine list was incomplete at the time of going to press, but already offers a fair choice, including half a dozen house wines and four half bottles.
