Beautifully situated in the Comeragh Mountains, between Clonmel and Dungarvan, Hanora’s is known as “the walking centre of the Nire Valley” - and with good reason, as there’s a whole range of magnificent hill walks starting from the front doorstep.
And, whether or not you’re a walker, it is a very special place - and, especially for weary city folk in need of clear country air, it makes a marvellously away-from-it-all adult-only destination where genuine hospitality is matched by thoughtfully comfortable accommodation and terrific food.
Mary Wall and her late husband Seamus came here in 1967, to live beside the church in the riverside cottage that was built by Seamus’s great grandparents – and opened as a guesthouse in 1986. Today, many extensions later, Mary still welcomes guests to Hanora’s with her son Eoin and his wife Judith - both Euro-Toques chefs and keen supporters of small local food producers, they have made the restaurant a popular destination locally as well as a delight for overnight guests.
They love introducing guests to local foods on their evening menus in the restaurant - and also (amongst an astonishing range of foods from Ireland and abroad) at the amazing Hanora’s breakfast, which sets everyone up for the outdoor activities - especially walking, but also birdwatching, fishing and painting - that draw people to this wonderfully unspoilt place. Walks are colour coded and maps can also be provided, along with packed lunches and walking sticks - and, of course, there will be a delicious dinner to return to as well. Magic.
