Forde's Restaurant

Happy customers and good lighting create a good atmosphere at this informal restaurant in a renovated building near the Ballast Office; on the first floor, overlooking the harbour it has mirrors reflecting lots of candles and, as darkness falls, lights twinkling across the harbour are highly atmospheric.

Although set up in the pared-down modern style, fresh flowers and candles on well-spaced polished tables create a caring feeling, and Liam Forde’s varied seasonal set and à la carte menus offer value and a wide choice, with vegetarian (and vegan) options listed although there’s an understandable leaning towards local seafood.

Steaks and Wexford mussels are popular options and servings are generous. Everything is made on the premises and well-trained, knowledgeable staff are courteous and efficient, and there’s an interesting, informative wine list. Sunday lunch and the short dinner menu offer especially good value.

[* Now also at the fast-growing suburb of Castlebridge (053 915 9767); open daily 12.00-9.30.]

Seats 80. D daily, 6-9.30, L Sun only, 12-6pm. Early D €24.95 (2-course), 6-7pm; Set Sun L about €24.95. Also á la carte. House wine from €18.50; SC discretionary. Reservations advised; air conditioning; children welcome. Closed 22-25 Dec. Diners, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
