Henry Downes

Established in 1759, and in the same (eccentric) family for six generations, John de Bromhead's unusual pub in Waterford is one of the few remaining houses to bottle its own whiskey. Although not the easiest of places to find, once visited it certainly will not be forgotten.

Large, dark and cavernous with a squash court on the premises as well as the more predictable billiards and snooker it consists of a series of bars of differing character, each with its own particular following.

It achieves with natural grace what so-called Irish theme pubs would dearly love to capture, and friendly, humorous bar staff enjoy filling customers in on the pub's proud history and will gladly sell you a bottle of Henry Downes No.9 to take away.

Not suitable for children. Open from 5pm to normal closing time. No food. Closed 25 Dec & Good Fri. No Credit Cards.
