Kinnitty Castle

Under new management - assessment pending

Furnished in keeping with its dramatic history and theatrical character, this Gothic Revival castle in the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains is at the centre of a very large estate with 650 acres of parkland and formal gardens.

Public areas include a library bar, Georgian style dining room, Louis XV drawing room and an atmospheric Dungeon Bar.

Bedrooms vary and the best are big and romantic, with great country views. Known as a successful wedding venue, it has atmospheric, medieval-style banqueting/conference facilities and also a small leisure centre (no swimming pool).

The castle is haunted (of course) and at its best a stay here can be great fun, but make sure you don’t leave your sense of humour at home.

Olde-worlde character and interested staff who contribute to the overall sense of fun are the things that make a visit to this hotel worth considering, and it should come as no surprise that wacky events including a Ghost Fest are held from time to time.

Conferences/Banqueting (300/200); secretarial services; free broadband wifi. Rooms 37 (6 suites, 8 ground floor, all no smoking); B&B €59-69 pps, single supplement €35. Children welcome (under 12s free in parents room, cots available free of charge). No lift (long corridors and a lot of stairs). Restaurant: D daily & L Sun. Tennis, fishing, garden. Closed 25/26 Dec. Amex, Diners, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
