This aptly named hotel just across the road from the river has a dramatic lobby with a large marble and granite fountain feature - and an imposing cast-iron staircase creates a certain expectation.
Bedrooms, many of which have views over the Shannon, are spacious and comfortable, with individual temperature control as well as the more usual amenities (direct dial phone, TV, tea/coffee facilities, trouser press) and well-finished bathrooms.
Informal daytime meals are offered in Aromas Café, and the balcony dining area previously known as Ferrari’s is now the Boardwalk Café, (aptly named after the new boardwalk across the road) and the trademark wall-mounted Ferrari has gone.
Very modern, with a marine theme, neon blue lighting and a cobblestone floor (the latter can be difficult for ladies in high heels) it also features 8 large screen televisions, which are less obtrusive than one would think.
The smart-casual food is very well presented and excellent value There is also an outdoor seating area in front of the hotel.
