Londonderry Arms Hotel
Carnlough, with its charming little harbour and genuinely old-fashioned atmosphere (they still sell things like candyfloss in the little shops) is one of the most delightful places in Northern Ireland.
The Londonderry Arms Hotel, built by the Marchioness of Londonderry in 1848 as a coaching inn, was inherited by her great grandson, Sir Winston Churchill, in 1921. Since 1948 it has been in the caring hands of the O'Neill family. The original building and interior remain intact, giving the hotel great character.
They do good home-made bar meals, or afternoon tea. which you can have in the bar or beside the fire in a comfortably old fashioned lounge; in the evening, that great Northern Irish speciality High Tea is served in the restaurant, before dinner service begins. Bedrooms - which all have full baths and include 14 newer ones added at the back of the hotel - are comfortable and well-furnished in keeping with the character of the building.
Many of the older rooms have sea views, and it is worthwhile discussing the type and location of your room when booking as one or two are badly positioned for a restful night's sleep.
The hotel is a good conference venue and makes a very pleasant base for a short break exploring the Glens of Antrim.
