Malmaison Hotel

This beautiful building (especially striking when lit up at night) is now owned by the stylish UK group Malmaison who introduced a new wow factor to Belfast accommodation choices, beginning with the reception area where everything is black and white, with opulent drapes and large church candles.

Although it may seem a bit overwhelming (notably the bar, which can be very noisy), friendly, efficient staff at this Belfast Hotels reception set arriving guests at their ease and guest accommodation - spacious, contemporary, luxurious, with all the technical gizmos you could possibly want - is given a human dimension with the offer of early morning delivery of a quarter pint of fresh milk.

The two suites aptly-named Samson and Goliath (after the famous Harland & Wolff cranes) sport nine foot beds, and one of them even has its own purple baize pool table.

The Brasserie offers simple wholesome fare (steaks from The Duke of Baccleuch’s Scottish Estate, for example), and good breakfasts are smartly served here too. The bar, with extensive cocktail menu, flat screen television, huge leather sofas, flickering lights, and loud music, is an in-place at night.

Multi storey car park nearby, but check details when booking as it is may not be possible to access your car at certain times.

Rooms 62; Room rate from about £140. Brasserie: L & D daily. Multi storey car park nearby. Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Switch.
