Man Of Aran Cottages

Despite its fame - this is where the film Man of Aran was made - Joe and Maura Wolfe make visiting their home on the Aran Islands a genuine and personal experience.

The cottage is right beside the sea and Kilmurvey beach, surrounded by wild flowers, and Joe has somehow managed to make a productive garden in this exposed location, so their meals - dinner, for residents only - usually include his organically grown vegetables (even artichokes and asparagus), salads, nasturtium flowers and young nettle leaves as well as Maura’s home-made soups, stews and freshly-baked bread and cakes.

Dinner might be rosemary roast leg of lamb or lamb hot pot with herb dumplings, or perhaps salmon or cod, served with Joe's vegetables – purple sprouting broccoli, cabbage, baby courgettes, or whatever you choose from his garden!

Meals are served in the little restaurant but there are benches in the garden, with stunning views across the sea towards the mountains, where you can enjoy an aperitif, or even eat outside on fine summer evenings.

Accommodation:

The three little bedrooms are basic but full of quaint, cottagey charm and they’re very comfortable, although only one is en-suite. Breakfast will probably be a well cooked full-Irish - made special by Joe’s beautifully sweet home-grown cherry tomatoes if you are lucky - although they’ll do something different if you like. Packed lunches are available too.

Rooms 3 (1 en-suite, all no smoking); B&B €40 pps, ss €15. Residents' D 7-8pm, by arrangement; €22. Children welcome (under 4s free in parents room, cot available). No pets. Garden, walking. Closed Nov-Feb. No Credit Cards.

Directions:

Mini bus or cycle from Kilronan, 6.5km (4 m).
