Where Jean Michel Caher's restaurant, La Coquille, used to be in Schull you will now find the New Haven, which is in the same ownership but re-styled as an all-day restaurant with a wider range of food offered if you have children in tow, you will find good value children's meals, and pizzas a-plenty.
Although recently refurbished, ventilation is poor, and bare tables are set up with nothing more than salt, pepper and a bottle of (homemade) vinaigrette; a knife and fork and thin paper napkin is brought with each plate.
However, the saving grace for adults is that menus still include some of the fresh fish and seafood for which Jean Michel is best known and, if the Guide's visit was typical, this is still by far the best choice: daily specials offer excellent fresh fish dishes, served with good chips.
Prawns in the shell with mayo are also good (and value too, at €8 for ten big prawns, ie langoustines); but beware the avocado with shrimp, made with frozen shrimp.
Seats 35. Open 12noon to 10.30pm in summer and 12 noon to 9pm in winter. No reservations. Amex, Diners, MasterCard, Visa.
