The Geary family have been running this beautifully located hotel since 1964 and, although many changes have been made over the years, it’s easy to see the line of hospitality that runs back to its origins as a small fishing hotel in the 1880s.
The setting is amazing, with water everywhere – it’s tucked between Lough Conn and Lough Cullin, in a leafy valley between the Nephin and Ox Mountains, and the views are truly lovely, especially in early morning and at dusk.
The much-extended building is now quite a large hotel, with extensive public areas on the ground floor all designed to make the most of the setting – notably the aptly named Waterfront Bar, where there is music on some nights, and two restaurants.
There’s something exceptionally relaxing about Pontoon, and this would make a comfortable base for a break in this area of unspoilt beauty.
Rooms vary a great deal, however, so it would be necessary to discuss your requirements when booking – many of the better ones have private terraces or balconies (also broadband), while the less attractive ones are better suited to single night stays when attending weddings etc.
Although most famous for fishing, the hotel offers a range of other breaks too, including Cookery, and Landscape Painting courses.
