Poppadom Indian Restaurant

Behind a neat but unremarkable frontage in a row of modern shops lies Poppadom, a colourful and airy new wave Indian restaurant, with linen-clad tables, comfortable chairs and a bar.

The aim is to demonstrate the diversity of Indian cooking and offer some appealingly unusual dishes.

Complimentary poppadoms with fresh chutney dips are brought before menus which offer regional specialities including a starter of Karwari Prawns - deep-fried jumbo prawns marinated in ginger, garlic, yoghurt, garam masala and barbecued in the tandoor - and main courses ranging in heat, including chicken and lamb specialities.

Vegetarians have plenty of dishes available as main courses or side orders, and variations like garlic, onion & coriander naan and lime rice offer a subtle change from the norm.

Food presentation matches the contemporary surroundings, and is backed up by solicitous service. Make a point of trying the masala tea, made with leaf tea and cardamom pods.

A sound wine list helpfully gives advice on the styles that partner spicy food well.

Also at: Newlands Cross, Dublin 22 (01 411 1144); Cornmarket St, Limerick (061 416644); and O'Connell St, Sligo (071 914 7171).
