Tightly packed with darkwood tables and dark leather highback chairs, this smart little Dublin restaurants in a redbrick corner building in Stoneybatter, a pleasant residential area near the Phoenix Park.
Aside from likely association with the address, the theme that inspired the name is the seven wonders of the world - illustrated in light boxes mounted on the wall, and also runs through the menu, which is sensibly restricted to seven starters and seven main courses.
What draws people to this little spot is good simple food, i.e. carefully sourced quality ingredients and well-cooked unfussy food: begin with smoked haddock chowder with mussels and bacon, perhaps, or a simple, tasty starter of crisp calamari with a mixed leaf and sesame soy dressing.
Choices are well-balanced, including fish and vegetarian dishes, but the most popular main course by far is a really good rib eye steak, perfectly caramelised on the outside and juicy inside, served with delicious mash and green beans.
Flavour and texture combinations are carefully judged; this is particularly noticeable in the choice of accompaniments for each dish and therein lies the reason the food here is so delicious.
Seven was an immediate hit with local residents, and the combination of small size and big popularity means there will be more than one sitting and your best chance of getting in without a reservation, on any day of the week, will be to arrive very early.
