The Storehouse
Pat Brophy's converted railway storehouse gives out all the right messages with stone walls, exposed beams and old wooden floors contrasting with fashionable high-backed chairs, and shiny bare wooden tables set up simply in contemporary style. It makes a warm and comfortable (if rather noisy) setting for meals that echo the same philosophy of updating classics - onion marmalade replaces the classic Cumberland sauce with chicken liver paté, for example, and steaks might come with Guinness battered onions instead of the familiar onion rings of yore. However, a few dishes - such as Storehouse Caesar Salad, and Storehouse Steak Diane - need no improvement and remain a pretty faithful rendition of the original, with only minor variations. Offering more contemporary side orders is used to liven up the old favourites too - spiced stir-fried greens will perk up a piece of plain grilled or pan-fried meat or fish in a flash, for instance, and the choice is yours: ideal in a fairly conservative area, where a restaurant needs to appeal to all age groups and a wide range of tastes. Themed nights are held form time to time - there may be a jazz and dinner package for example, or classical music and fine dining. A user-friendly wine list is organised by style. *An extra 25-seater fine dining room is to be added to the restaurant at the time of going to press, and there are also plans to cover the patio area, to allow al fresco dining. Parking (30 spaces). The Kildare Farmers Market is held in the carpark every Saturday.
