The White Cottages

Jackie and Joe O’Connors’ B&B is beautifully located on the sea side of the road on the edge of Skerries town, and it is truly unique – how often do you wake up to the sound of waves on the rocks outside your bedroom window?

The unbroken sea views – across the harbour and, to the north, taking in the magnificent Mountains of Mourne – are simply stunning, and all the better for seeing them from such a warm and relaxing base. Unselfconsciously stylish, it’s a comfortable family home with dog beds a-plenty, art materials laid out in the conservatory (classes are held there), plenty of comfy lounging space and welcoming fires – a cosy contrast to the elements betimes.

The four bedrooms are all very individual – one very popular room has its own little patio, there’s an atmospheric family room up in the eaves and, while the smallest room doesn’t have a sea view, it compensates with a highly original four-poster bed. There is charm in spades, but standards are very high too and everything is immaculate, including the smart en-suite shower rooms.

Jackie offers an attractive breakfast menu, including unusual items like smoked mackerel (served with scrambled egg), and you can have it out on the terrace in fine weather – a perfect observation point for watching the seals and other abundant wildlife.

Afternoon tea is also available to residents by arrangement – a lovely way to round off a day out in the area, visiting Ardgillan Castle & Gardens (up the hill, just behind the house), or Skerries Windmills perhaps, walking nearby beaches or playing one of the umpteen golf courses that are within a short drive.

Nearby Dublin seems a world away – a great place to chill out for a few days.

Rooms 4 (all en suite & no smoking, 1 family, 2 shower only, 3 ground floor); children welcome (under 7s free in parents room, cot available free of charge, baby sitting arranged). B&B €45-50 pps (low-high season); ss €15. Free broadband wi/fi. During low season and for bookings over 3 days, special deals may be on offer. Open all year. No credit cards.

Directions:

From M1 take R127 to Skerries, enter Skerries under railway bridge arch and take first left off roundabout. Take left turn on to Balbriggan road at traffic lights. Premises 0.5km on right.
