The Wolftrap

The brainchild of Gina Murphy and her husband Padraig McLoughlin (previously of the well-known bar and restaurant, Crockets on the Quay, in Ballina, Co Mayo, which is still run by members of the family), this large bar in Tullamore is named after a mountain in the nearby Slieve Blooms (the border between Laois and Offaly is at its peak), and occupies a large town centre building near the harbour, which they have renovated and furnished with flair.

With its warm atmosphere, long opening hours, imaginative menus and great service, it's the in place - and consistently good cooking (a judicious mixture of traditional and contemporary) invariably hits the spot.

* Restaurant upstairs closed to concentrate on the bar food offering in a gastro-pub style, served daily to 9.30pm.

Traditional music every Tuesday (Padraig is a musician). Late bar with DJ Fri & Sat to 2am. Bar food 7 days, 11.30-8.30pm. House wine €18. Closed Good Fri, 25 Dec. MasterCard, Visa, Laser.

Directions:

In the centre of Tullamore @ the junction of William and Harbour Streets.
