Built by the legendary Breton chef Youen Jacob in 2008 and now run with informal style, warmth and vibrancy by his son, Youen, and his wife Kate, this well-named hotel in the heart of Baltimore village enjoys views over the harbour towards Sherkin Island. Many of the generous big rooms have sea views and there’s a lovely continental feel to the bar, which has big doors opening out onto the square, where a large seating area is shared by their Jolie Brise pizzeria, next door. Seriously tasty food is served in Jacob’s Bar, where some of the famous Chez Youen dishes (including the giant Seafood Platters) are still on the excellent menu, and there’s regular live music too.
And there is so much to do in the area, including watersports and angling, island tours on the ferries, whale and dolphin watching, the West Cork Garden Trail and the nearby Lough Ine salt water lake heritage site - where you can go canoeing at night to see it sparkling with phosphorescence.
