One of Carlingford’s most interesting houses, the Carroll family’s 18th century property is attractively situated in its own walled grounds on the edge of the medieval village, with views across Carlingford Lough to the Mountains of Mourne – a perfect place for our Hideaway Of The Year award, and, handily located halfway between Dublin and Belfast, just the spot for a refreshing spring break. The Carrolls have been welcoming guests to this lovely place for over 30 years and it gets a lot of TLC – with many upgrades and refurbishments discreetly completed in recent times under the stewardship of the very hands-on owner-manager, Paul Carroll. Accommodation is offered in atmospheric rooms in the main house and newer ones in an adjacent building, all with sea or mountain views. Good food with a sense of place is central to everything at Ghan House, with home grown seasonal produce, local seafood and mountain lamb among the highlights – and residents and other guests in for dinner can mingle and relax in the bar, or beside the fire in the drawing room, which makes for a convivial ambience. There is plenty to discover in and around the ancient village, of course, and activities nearby include hill walking and cycling on the Carlingford greenway – or, when the ferry is running, you can have the fun of a scenic trip across the lough to explore the Mournes.
