Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality.

Ballycross Apple Farm

Visitors are encouraged and the family friendly activities make this rural idyll a perfect weekend destination
Farm Shop open weekends (Sat, Sun & bank hol Mons 12pm-6pm) in apple season (dates vary, late summer to spring); juices are well distributed and can be ordered online. abbreviations

With its beautiful stone courtyard and the family friendly activities that make it a perfect weekend destination, the rural idyll that is the Von Englebrechtan family's farm belies the dedication and hard work that go into producing a superb range of single variety apple juices, speciality mixed fruit juices, and weekly production of fresh-pressed juice.

The farm is open to coincide with the ripening of different apple varieties from late summer until the spring blossom, and it makes a great day out where children can meet farm animals (and other children), and see the apple trees.

Visitors are encouraged to bring wellies and warm clothes for the trail through the woodland and orchards, where varieties including Elstar, Discovery, Cevaal and Jonagold are all grown for flavour and availability over a long season, and there's other fruit too, including pears and blackcurrants.

Back at the courtyard, apples and juices take pride of place in the shop but you'll also find homemade preserves, other speciality foods and hampers - and you can sit in the courtyard to enjoy a coffee and freshly made waffles from their waffle bar. Upstairs, meanwhile, visiting the extensive interiors and gift shop may take some time.

Recognition has come from many quarters, including an Irish Food Writers' Guild Award in 2005.
