Browns Bonds Hill

Undoubtedly some of the finest cooking in the land - visitors to Derry should ensure that at least one meal at Browns Bonds Hill is firmly fixed in their itinerary.
L Wed-Sat 12-2.30pm. D Tue-Sat 5-9pm (Fri & Sat to 10pm), Early D Tue-Thu 5.30-7pm, Fri 5-6.30pm, Sat 5-6pm, c.£30. Set 3 course D £40. Tasting menu c.£65 (wine pairing c.£35); also à la carte & vegetarian/vegan menus. Children welcome (children’s menu). Closed Sun & Mon. Amex, MasterCard, Visa abbreviations

The city’s most highly-regarded restaurant over several decades, Browns has been enjoying an exciting phase since 2009, in the ownership of Ian Orr and Marcus Roulston. Since then they have also opened Browns in Town nearby on Strand Road, Ardtara Country House Hotel & Restaurant at Upperlands - and, most recently, Eighteen Ninety Four in Portstewart.

Ian, a leading chef who had established a reputation in the region from his time as head chef at Rathmullan House in Co Donegal (among several respected kitchens), has always been known for his dedication to fresh seasonal produce and support of local suppliers - and, for visitors keen to experience the best the area has to offer, a meal at this smart restaurant - the flagship of the Browns Bonds Hill Group - is a must.

It's in the Waterside area on the eastern bank of Lough Foyle, and seeing the neat, understated modern exterior - which can be glimpsed from the traffic lights beside the station across the road (a handy place to park, then take the pedestrian crossing) - always creates a sense of excited anticipation.

A carefully considered range of menus is offered, including an à la carte lunch (Wed-Sat), a set 2/3 course pre-theatre menu, à la carte dinner, a dedicated vegetarian/vegan menu, Sunday lunch and also a 7-course Tasting Menu, with optional wine pairings. All showcase local ingredients and are keenly priced without compromising on quality in any way - each menu is enticing to read and every dish is as delicious as it sounds.

Whatever is chosen, Ian Orr and his team cook it with a deft hand and a light touch, allowing the natural flavour, texture and colour of ultra-fresh ingredients to take the lead – and one of the most appealing features of his menus is the quality and range of mainstream vegetarian and vegan options.

An excellent drinks menu - including local craft beers and spirits - complements the food, and solicitous service is the norm at this deservedly popular restaurant.

This is undoubtedly some of the finest cooking in the land, and visitors to Derry should ensure that at least one meal here is firmly fixed in their itinerary.

Events including cooking demonstrations and Tasting Dinners are also offered, along with outside catering (check website for details.)
