Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality. Highly Recommended as a Special Place to Stay Outstanding Location, building or atmosphere The "Best of the Best" - Only the very best establishments across various categories have been chosen for this accolade

A true hidden gem in an out of the way almost seaside location in West Cork, this lovely 18th century property is run as a luxury coastal escape by Kela and Stephen Hodgins, who left Dublin in 2016 to undertake its restoration.

While it has no shortage of fine historical features, as might be expected, it's definitely not your average country house as it's main claim to fame in the locality is that it was the home of Jimi Hendrix’s base guitarist Noel Redding for 30 years. That gives it 'oodles of rock & roll character' that will be  a special treat for many guests, but it has since been extensively and tastefully refurbished by Kela and Stephen and you certainly don't need to be a particular fan of rock and roll to love a stay here.

It's a big house (over 5,000 sq ft) and very well set up for groups, with two comfy, stylishly-furnished reception rooms with wood burning stoves, a formal dining room and a well equipped kitchenas well as six large bedroom suites all with private bathrooms. The old Orchard Cottage in the walled garden has also been renovated and this charming little house has three cosy bedrooms and an open-plan living  area.

The two properties combined can accommodate up to 23 guests, making it ideal for family get togethers, small weddings and other groups, and each property is also available separately.

Store-cupboard essentials and a welcome pack of homemade scones, butter, local jam, tea, coffee and milk are provided but Kela is a keen cook so, unlike most self catering / private venues, private catering is also offered  - and, not surprisngly, Kela and Stephen find that most guests book this service at least once during their stay. Dinner parties and buffet lunches are most popular, with menus based on produce from some of West Cork’s best artisan food, fish and meat suppliers as well as seasonal produce from the walled garden.

Dunowen House, together with its charming little sister Orchard Cottage, must be one of the most delightful destinations anywhere in Ireland and - although billed as 'self-catering' - the level of service offered is also outstanding.
