Enjoying a picturesque location beside the Royal Canal, this boutique hotel near Blanchardstown offers contemporary accommodation, a pleasant bar and restaurant, and a large heated deck with outdoor seating overlooking the lock.

Under new ownership since 2016, following a closure, local businessman Greg Browne is now at the helm and the entire complex, including the twelve bedrooms, has had a total makeover. Situated on the lower ground floor, the rooms are modern, tastefully decorated and with all of the in-room amenities needed by business and leisure travellers, including the welcome addition of a Nespresso machine.

Featuring a red-brick feature wall at one end and the entrance to the decked terrace at the other, the main bar is an attractive space with a polished wooden floor and a fresh blue and white theme giving it a bright and airy look. The seating is very comfortable too, with high stools, chairs and banquettes in a pleasing blue/green tweed-effect upholstery.

An interesting menu offers some unusual dishes such as starters like rabbit terrine and tuna carpaccio, while main dishes could include ribeye steak, Thai curry and salt beef hash – a well-thought out dish with salt beef, chorizo and wilted spinach, topped with a poached egg.

For dessert, expect favourites like chocolate brownie and Bailey’s cheesecake, and there's a short wine list offering a choice of 10 white and 10 red wines - prices are reasonable, with bottles from €22, by the glass from €5.50.

With a tranquil setting yet close to shopping and commercial centres, and accessible to the city's attractions, The Twelfth Lock is ideal for a business stay or short break. It's also a popular destination for Dubliners heading out for a meal or a drink, a handy place for walkers enjoying the canalside tow-path to take a break - and, of course, just the spot for people visiting by boat.
