Abbey Tavern

Just 50 yards up from the harbour, part of this famous pub dates back to the 15th century, when it was built as a seminary for the local monks.

Currently owned by James and Eithne Scott-Lennon, this well-run and immaculately maintained pub retains authentic features including open turf fires, original stone walls, flagged floors and gas lights.

In 1960 the Abbey started to lay on entertainment and this has brought the tavern its fame: the format is a traditional 5-course dinner followed by traditional Irish music. It's on every night but booking is essential, especially in high season.

Daytime food is offered in the bar although, in the Guide's experience, the evening meals served upstairs in The Abbot Restaurant tend to be better.

This atmospheric dining room is one of Dublin's longest-established restaurants, dating right back to 1956 and, with open fires and natural stone walls, it has character and a welcoming ambience; fresh fish is a speciality, but menus are not long and everything offered should be wholesome and enjoyable in a homely style that suits the surroundings.

Seats 70 (private room, 40); children welcome; reservations required; air conditioning. Restaurant open Fri-Sat D (extended opening days from March 08); 2/3 course D €35/39; house wine €18. SC discretionary. Bar food served daily, 1-9pm; carpark on harbour. Restaurant closed Sun, Mon; establishment closed 25 Dec & Good Fri. Amex, Diners, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
