Barrtra Seafood Restaurant
Views of Liscannor Bay from Paul and Theresa O'Brien's traditional, whitewashed cottage on the cliffs just outside Lahinch can be magic on a fine evening - and pleasingly simple décor, large windows and a conservatory allow them to take centre stage. Local seafood is the other star attraction - Barrtra was our Seafood Restaurant of the Year in 2002 - and Theresa's excellent, unfussy cooking continues to make the most of a wide range of fish, while also offering a choice for those with other preferences.
Several menus are offered in high season, starting with their famous 5 O'clock Menu which is a real snip - giving value has always been a priority here and local seafood is all offered at customer-kindly prices; lobster is a speciality, when available, and is very reasonably priced - on the dinner menu it only attracts a small supplement.
Otherwise expect dishes like the richly flavoured Barrtra fisherman's broth, hot smoked mackerel with potato salad and wholegrain mustard mayonnaise, and perfectly cooked fish with excellent sauces; exact timing and perfect judgement of flavourings enhances the fish, while always allowing it to be "itself". Vegetarian dishes are highlighted on menus, and vegetables generally are another strong point (note the large polytunnel), a deliciously flavoursome combination that will include beautiful Clare potatoes is served on a platter.
Paul is a great host, managing front of house with easy hospitality, and is responsible for an interesting and keenly priced wine list, which includes a wide choice of house wines and half bottles, several sherries and a beer menu.
Quality and outstanding value are the hallmarks of this great little restaurant - and recent visits by the Guide confirms that it remains as delightful as ever.
