Treyvaud's Restaurant
Brothers Paul and Mark Treyvaud opened this attractive and friendly town-centre restaurant in 2003, and it has earned a well-deserved local following and a reputation well beyond the area.
The decor is gently contemporary, and daytime menus are carefully constructed to allow anything from a tasty little bite to a full blown meal.
You could start with a delicious bowl of seafood chowder, perhaps, which come with excellent home-made bread, and then something from the ‘Nibbles’ section of the menu, such as tasty Treyvaud’s fish cakes, or one of their speciality Sambos (the famous Club Sambo bears little resemblance to the usual); hot main courses include warm salads and Mark’s Specials - their beef & Guinness pie with mashed potatoes is one of the best you’ll find anywhere.
The dinner menu takes over at 5 o’clock, and includes some items from the day menu - the soups and the speciality fish cakes, for example, with smoked haddock, wholegrain mustard & chives - plus a wide range of appealing and fairly priced dishes including favourites like braised shank of Kerry lamb, and some less usual (ostrich, for example, which is farmed in Ireland), several seafood choices and at least two for vegetarians (one of which is likely to be a pasta dish).
A short mid-range wine list offers a couple of half carafes and half a dozen fine wines.
Good cooking, moderate pricing, long opening hours and well-trained staff with a clear desire to send customers away happy with their meal have proved a winning formula for this deservedly popular restaurant.
The early dinner and (very popular) Sunday lunch offer especially good value.
