This popular Dublin restaurants just across the road from the bustling Victorian Georges Street Arcade. It is one of Chef Dylan McGrath's trio of city centre restaurants (sister venues Rustic Stone and Fade Street Social are both nearby) and, although it has a narrow street frontage, it is high-ceilinged and deceptively large, extending way back into an old building.
The décor is unfussy modern, for the most part, with wooden floors, simple bare-topped tables and leather 'bus seat' style banquettes or chairs that would look at home in a country kitchen. Along with interesting lighting and some unusual artwork, the eye-catcher is a whole wall of mismatched plates, echoing the traditional kitchen dresser - a good idea that lends warmth and informality. It adds up to a comfortably stylish setting for a well-planned choice of menus that are strong on local provenance - suppliers listed include John Stone Beef (Longford), Peter Hannan (salt-aged beef and more, Moira, Co Down), Gilligan’s Farm (Roscommon), Pat McLoughlins Butchers, Glenmar Shellfish of Union Hall and Goatsbridge Trout in Kilkenny among others. They offer something different from the standard fare and, with excellent cooking and aims including 'Classic dishes done really well' and 'Delicious dining, at affordable prices', it's not hard to see why Brasserie Sixty6 has been so popular ever since it first opened in 2005.
Food from the rotisserie, especially dry-aged and salt-aged beef and rare breed pork, is the main speciality, but there are plenty of other choices including some really good vegetarian dishes. Fish cookery is also good and you can continue the savoury flavours with an all-Irish cheese board (typically Hegarty cheddar, Durrus farmhouse cheese, Wicklow Blue and St Tola goats cheese) or finish with very nicely made variations on classics desserts, such as pannacotta, warm chocolate brownies or tiramisu.
To accompany, an interesting wine list with short tasting notes offers a good choice of wines by the glass and bottle, and there's a great cocktail menu including a range of €10 classics.
The value offered is good and uniformed staff with thorough menu knowledge provide commendably efficient service at this atmospherically busy restaurant.
