The Great Western Greenway brings a lot of people to Newport, and the town is the better for it.

The Blue Bicycle is on the ground floor of an impressive stone building with steps leading up to it, on the right as you head for Achill - and many of the visitors who are looking for a bite to eat while they’re passing through the town head straight here, to Phil Chambers’ delightful old-world tea room.

This atmospheric spot is a real blast from the past in some ways, with its dainty china and home baking, but the focus on local and home grown ingredients is timeless. Afternoon Tea is a speciality, of course, with freshly baked scones and jam, cream cakes and a tea menu offered, but there’s also wholesome savoury fare, including good home-made soups and brown bread, also a range of salads, sandwiches and panini.

A great little place to find on your travels.
