There's a real buzz about Loretta's, a slickly fitted neighbourhood restaurant in a former Phibsborough bank opposite Doyle’s Corner.
The clean-lined decor cleverly incorporates elements of the bank – the old safe door and original floors can be found hanging on the walls, and there are large windows that enhance the sense of space in this high-ceilinged dining room. The brown and taupe palette is smart, with cool design features and geometric details.
Toting a baseball cap, chef-owner Jimmy Wiley can be seen in the open kitchen whipping up his simple, flavour-packed comfort food, inspired by his home town of Colorado Springs.
Having cooked at The Pig’s Ear, Mr Fox and most recently 777, Wiley clearly knows his food and is comfortable with big flavours. His appetising menus feature honest, flavour packed, satisfying dishes with meat his strong point.
It could be a moreish Skeaghanore duck salad with ember-roasted beets and Violette mustard, or Loretta’s Southern fried chicken which, we predict, is unlikely to ever leave the menu. The succulent chicken with piquant coating is served with an excellent grilled corn slaw and fluffy buttermilk ‘biscuit’ smothered with pickled jalapeno honey butter.
Portions are generous and there’s a strong drinks offering of affordable wines, spirits, cocktails and beers, including locally brewed Porterthouse beers.
Charming service, cool tunes, comfy seating and a chilled vibe make Loretta’s a place for all seasons.
