Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality. Pub with good food and atmosphere

The Bernard Shaw

A buzzy pub by the BodyTonic group, majoring in craft beers, great tunes, and really good pub food, The Bernard Shaw is one of Dublin’s coolest venues. Don't miss out on their excellent Naughty Burgers, which are worth a detour alone.
Open Mon-Sat 12 noon-late. Beer Garden, outdoor seating. Eatyard Food Market: Thu 4pm-10pm, Fri-Sun Sun 12pm-10pm. MasterCard, Visa. abbreviations

Skirting the edges of Glasnevin, Drumcondra and Phibsborough, The Bernard Shaw made its much documented move in 2019 from Dublin 8 to Dublin 9. Run by the creative BodyTonic crew, whose origins stem from the Dublin club scene, the creative collective now runs festivals, pubs and music venues while brewing their own beer and dreaming up new projects.

Housed in a distinctive Art Deco building that was originally the iconic Iona Garage (and, more recently, Porterhouse North), this large two-storey premises has a beer garden and now houses Bodytonic’s popular Eatyard concept, a food market selling a range of quality street food made by independent suppliers.

The Bernard Shaw has its own in-house menus too, offering quality takes on pub classics. Snacks like nachos are well executed and served with generous toppings, including good quality guacamole. The hot dog is also a cut above average, featuring a Jane Russell Italian style sausage with caramelised onions and mustard in a soft roll.

But it’s the Naughty Burger menu that steals the show. A new Bodytonic brand, the burgers are made with large patties of Irish beef, grilled over flames with lovely raggy edges that char to add superior smoky flavour. Served in soft baps, with a good choice of toppings that includes the signature Naughty Sauce, these meaty and delicious burgers are exceptional, making them contenders for the capital’s best hamburger. A fish burger, buttermilk chicken burger and vegan burger are also on offer  and you’ll find good fries and sides like corn on the cob.

The Bernard Shaw also brews its own beers, and has an interesting and unique choice. You’ll find several Porterhouse offerings, alongside specials like Brewtonic 420 hemp ale and Brewtonic Relax the Cacks Session IPA. Cocktails are popular here, and wine drinkers are well taken care of, with 12 choices, including 6 on tap from WineLab.

The decorative copper piping makes for an interesting design feature inside, and harks back to the building's microbrewery days. Expect the coolest tunes (Fontaines DC, anyone?) and swift, efficient service in this justifiably popular venue.

Sad as Dubliners were to see the 2012 closure of one of the city’s most iconic businesses, the Dublin Woollen Mills (where James Joyce, no less, once worked), it is cheering to see Elaine Murphy and the team from the equally iconic Winding Stair next door serving u ...
