Glenlo Abbey Hotel
Georgina Campbell
Originally an eighteenth century residence, Glenlo Abbey is just two and a half miles from Galway city yet, beautifully located on a 138-acre estate, with lovely views over Lough Corrib and its own golf course and Pavilion, it offers all the advantages of the country.
Although it is not a very big hotel, the scale is generous: public rooms are impressive, and the old Abbey has been restored, making a perfect traditional setting for small weddings - blessings and private dining are both possible here - whilst, for larger numbers and a more contemporary style, receptions are held in the Pavilion Suite. (There is a small traditional church nearby.)
The wedding venues wedding co-ordinator works with the bride and groom to ensure that everything at the hotel runs smoothly and, although outside arrangements like organising a limousine or a coach for guests are the couple’s responsibility, a programme can be arranged for guests staying in this beautiful area for a day or two.
Glenlo Abbey has a reputation for good food and four historic Pullman train carriages in the hotel grounds operate as a restaurant; it is sometimes available for weddings (seats 66), and guests staying on should certainly make a point of dining in these highly entertaining surroundings. Whichever venue is chosen for the event, couples have the unusual opportunity to choose their own menu from the regular restaurant A la Carte.
Accommodation includes three suites, one of which is complimentary for the bride and groom, subject to 50 guests attending and a minimum of 15 bedrooms must be reserved.
This is a great wedding venue, offering a remarkable amount of choice for weddings of varying sizes and styles - and there is much fun to be had here.
