Cruinniu na mBad Festival - Co Galway

Friday 17th - Sunday 19th August 2012

Up to 100 unique Irish boats, the Galway Hookers, once the workhorses of the coast of Connemara and North Clare, will gather for a weekend of racing and celebration at Cruinniú na mBád (Gathering of the Boats) festival in Kinvara, Co. Galway, in August.

Since its revival in 1979, the festival has become one of the most unique and successful weekend festivals in Ireland. It will include a series of races for the four types of Galway Hookers. They include: the Bád Mór, which is the largest vessel measuring between 35 to 44 feet in length; the second largest, the Leath Bhád , has a hull length of roughly 32 feet; the Gleoiteog; and the diminutive Púcán.

Dr Michael Brogan, Cruinniú na mBád organiser, said that the visual spectacle of the colourful traditional boats, under sail, at high water in Kinvara Bay, is unparalleled and thousands of visitors are expected in Kinvara for the festival to enjoy the races and many other attractions and events.

"The continuity of traditional festivals, especially Cruinniú na mBád, is very important for the survival of the craftsmanship of traditional boatbuilding, sail making and the "art" of old style sailing. It also nurtures the culture that surrounds it including sean nós singing and the use of the Irish language,” Dr Brogan said.

The Galway Hookers are coming into Kinvara on Friday evening carrying turf and unloading it at 17.00. There will be gleoteóg races on Saturday and Sunday, and there will be music from 16.00 onwards on both evenings.
