Originally a tiny restaurant, tucked away on the way into the James Street car park, where they had just 3 or 4 tables, Victor Berger and George Murgulet's first Westport venture was very atmospheric and great fun.
Then, in 2020, they took on a much larger premises at the top of Bridge Street where Cian's used to be. This was a big change, but they proved to be well up to up to the challenge and settled in well.
George runs front of house with his sister and Victor is the chef. They soon earned a following for their warm hospitality and excellent, fairly priced food - and, although originally open all day, they now focus on dinner. They describe their style 'as local food with an international flavour', which sums it up well, and menus that aim to 'surprise and satisfy' are based on fresh produce in season, with daily specials in addition to a seasonallt changed à la carte. Good fish cooking is a particular strength. and - as Victor was formerly the pastry chef in a fine dining French restaurant - you may also expect some special treats on the dessert menu.
A good neighbourhood restaurant with a lovely atmosphere and generous portions, Friends has earned well deserved popularity for its high standards of food and hospitality and it's a great asset to the dining options in this lovely town.
