Another of the unrivalled collection of fine Killarney hotels, this family-owned establishment is a charming older sister to the luxurious Hayfield Manor Hotel in Cork city (see entry) the Great Southern Killarney, nearby and, more recently, the lovely St Helen's Hotel in Dublin.
Proprietors Joe and Margaret Scally have lavished care and investment on this delightful property, resulting in a beautifully furnished and intimate hotel in an elegant period style that is totally appropriate to the age and design of the building while also having a fresh feeling.
Recently refurbished and rebranded 'Townhouse' in order to convey its special qualities as a restorative retreat, no expense was spared on the highest quality of materials and workmanship. Relaxed comfort is a priority and the individually designed rooms all have sitting areas and marbled bathrooms. Local Irish craftsmanship is a point of pride and collaborations with Mucross Weavers (ocated at nearby Muckross House) and local artis Declan Mulvany contribute to the hotel's sense of place.
Dining at the Killarney Royal entered a new phase in 2026 with the opening of the relaxed Fig restaurant, which offers a varied all day menu with a focus on locally-produced seasonal food - the aim is to source 70% of ingredientrs from local producers, which creates a natural seasonal flow.
But what ihas always been most remarkable, perhaps, is the warm and friendly atmosphere that prevails throughout the hotel, conveyed through the soft warm tones inspired by the local landscape that have been chosen for furnishing schemes, and the attentive attitude of friendly, caring staff.
A combination of light contemporary food and heartier fare is offered throughout the day in the informal bar/bistro area, which is a popular meeting place, while the main restaurant – which has recently been smartly refurbished – is more formal, and reservations are required.
