Easily spotted on Killarney’s Muckross Road, John and Sinead Courtney's attractive creeper-clad boutique hotel enjoys views of the Kerry mountains, while both the town centre and the National Park are just a stroll away.

Known especially for its friendly staff and the space and comfort of the public areas - including a formal restaurant and separate breakfast room - The Victoria has been extensively refurbished and upgraded in recent years and it now has a contemporary feel, with bright pops of colour throughout giving it a lively vibe.

It makes a very comfortable base to relax in after a day out exploring the National Park or the Ring of Kerry, when the cosy Ivy Lounge is just the place to enjoy a cocktail before dinner. With two open fires, it's ideal for those 'soft' Kerry days, while The Botanical terrace beckons when the sun shines.

The luxurious bedrooms are well designed for longer stays, with ample space for a seating area with comfy arm chairs, also wall mounted TV and a well-lit desk. There's complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and rooms have all the necessary extras including a safe, ironing board, hair-drier, bottled water, and a kettle for tea/coffee. The smart bathrooms are a good size, with large walk-in showers (but no bath except in suites), plenty of marble shelf space around the basin for toiletries etc and a useful dim light for night.

Although handy to the town for dinner, many guests opt to eat in and it should be an enjoyable experience. The Ivy restaurant offers well-executed mid-range dining in atmospheric surroundings, with plenty of popular choices on a wide ranging à la carte menu - and (as elsewhere in the hotel) engaging service. The Courtyard Restaurant is another appealing option or, when a more casual meal is preferred, there's also a good all-day menu - and of course the opportunity to linger over an after-dinner drink at the bar - in the Ivy Lounge. Anyone for Irish Coffee?

In the morning, the bright breakfast room makes an upbeat setting to start the day with a cooked to order breakfast. There's no buffet but no shortage of choice either, with juices, fresh and cooked fruits (such as Rhubarb Compote with natural yogurt and almonds) breads and pastries all brought to your table, as well as hot dishes like the Full Irish (or a mini version if preferred), French style pancakes, and much more, including charcuterie and Irish cheeses.

All round, with space and comfort, excellent service from the very friendly staff, good food and fair pricing, it's easy to see why The Victoria is so popular.
