Lismore Castle

Lismore Castle is perhaps Ireland’s most romantic fairytale castle, and has been the Irish home of the Dukes of Devonshire since 1753. Situated in a panoramic position overlooking the Blackwater Valley, it has views over rolling, wooded hills to the Knockmealdown Mountains beyond.

When the Duke is not in residence, the castle is available for private rental - guests can enjoy all the splendour and privacy of living in the Duke’s quarters of the castle and are looked after by his own personal staff.

This wedding venues got a Church of Ireland Cathedral and a Catholic Church nearby, wedding blessings can also be held at the castle - and, of course, the photo opportunities are sensational. The €25,000 fee, for a 2 day package to hire the whole castle, includes: accommodation (for up to 23 guests in 12 bedrooms, with dinner, breakfast and afternoon tea provided), the banquet on the night of the wedding (for up to 80 guests), specialist flower arrangements, and canapes served during the pre-dinner reception.

When guests arrive, the drinks reception is held in the hall, dining room and (weather permitting) on the balcony; guests then move through to the Banqueting Hall, where six or seven tables are set up for the wedding and first courses (typically salmon mousse, pate maison or melon) are already laid out - when catering at full capacity the food would necessarily be cold.

The bride and groom’s table has waiter service throughout the evening, but for other guests the service would be on a buffet basis. After the first course, plates are cleared away and then the tables are called up one by one to the buffet (choice of salmon mayonnaise, roast beef or roast ham, with a selection of salads).

After dessert (lemon tart, fruit salad / meringue, chocolate mousse) a cheeseboard is served at each table, and tea and coffee is available throughout the night. Evening guests are allowed and, although there is normally no pay bar, it is possible get a licence transferred from a local hotel.

The only extras are the band and drinks, which the bride and groom supply (no corkage is charged), making this extremely good value, particularly for such a special venue. In addition to the accommodation included in the venue hire charge, guests can stay in Lismore town, where there are several bars which regularly host Irish musical evenings.

An activity programme can be arranged for guests staying a few days - a unique opportunity to explore one of Ireland’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas.
